Hello! I'm Matthew, an animator and film maker combining the efficiency of digital animation with the unique quirks and charming style of hand made animation. Growing up in foster care with my brother and sister, watching the oddest corners of British terrestrial children's TV was the one thing that brought us together, and I've had an admiration for the bright colours and messy, grungey aesthetics of early 2010s ever since. As an adult, I adore the freedom and speed of expression afforded by hand made mediums as you can throw ideas at a camera and every imperfection and slight detail in the objects will be preserved into a charming, almost rebellious expression of human creativity sorely lacking in an overly refined modern world.
My childhood dream was to become a musician, and I initially learned to animate in my (extremely limited) spare time, whilst studying computer science at Imperial College, in order to create music videos for my songs. I quickly learned that I had much more of a gift for animation than singing, and left the life of academia to study Animation and Visual Effects at Brunel University. I worked briefly as a VFX assistant with credits on House of the Dragon and Gangs of London, but became frustrated with the dullness and greyness of making things realistic and decided to freelance making colourful, fun creations. This background in digital animation allows me to work faster and more efficiently by compositing many hand made elements together or digitally scanning real world objects into 3D models for animation, so I can offer hand made claymation style work at a cheaper rate and much faster turnover time than most artists in the space.
